Mare artificial insemination info and pricing

At Adelaide Plains Equine Clinic, we offer a wide range of equine reproduction services including chilled and frozen semen artificial insemination, as well as stallion collection and shipment of chilled semen.

It is best to bring your mare to the clinic on the first day you first notice her in season. If you prefer to induce oestrus in your mare, we recommend giving her an injection of prostaglandin (dispensed through the veterinary clinic) on a Thursday and then evaluating her either Sunday night or Monday morning, depending on the days the stallion will be collected.

Once she is detected in oestrus, she will be scanned every other day until a breedable follicle is detected. We will then order semen and she will be given ovuplant to induce ovulation. We would like the semen to be collected at the airport or post office to ensure that it arrives at the clinic in the best possible condition. It is preferable (and cheaper!) if the mare owner delivers the semen to the clinic. If that is not possible, we can arrange pick up.

2009 Artificial Insemination Prices

Chilled Semen:
Fixed price for chilled semen AI-$350, plus agistment, including 16 day pregnancy scan if performed at clinic. (excluding drugs)

Frozen Semen:
Fixed price for frozen semen AI-$500, plus agistment, including 16 day pregnancy scan if performed at clinic. (excluding drugs)

Your mare may require additional diagnostic techniques such as a uterine swab, biopsy, or flush prior to insemination. The cost of consumables, drug and laboratory fees are additional costs and will be added to the account.

After you choose a stallion for your mare, please give us a call so that we can book in your mare. We can then determine the best possible plan in order to get your mare in foal this season.
(Note: if the combined age of the mare and stallion are above 25, there is a lesser chance of breeding success. For older mares, it is advised to choose a younger stallion.)

Stallion collection and shipment info and pricing

At Adelaide Plains Equine Clinic, we offer a wide array of equine reproductive services including stallion collection, shipping of cooled semen, semen count and evaluation, and mare artificial insemination (please see mare listing for services and pricing info).

We have a collection mount and a teaser mare that will allow us to collect your stallion. It is helpful for us to know approximately 24-48 hours in advance when your stallion will need collection in order for us to prepare our jump mare. We are able to provide cooled semen shippers across Australia or we can breed the mare at the clinic with fresh semen. We also have frozen semen shippers and can store frozen semen.

If there are any concerns with semen quality, we perform semen evaluation including sperm morphology, progressive motility, and count.

Please give us a call if you are interested in collecting your stallion or for any of our other reproductive services.

Stallion Collection Fees 2009

Collect stallion: $180
Collect new stallion/train stallion to mount: $250
Complete semen evaluation: $80 count only $40

Information concerning the purchase and use of frozen semen
INTERESTED IN BREEDING YOUR MARE WITH FROZEN SEMEN?

Frozen semen is now widely available throughout Australia and is an excellent option for breeding your mare. However, there are significant cost differences and success rates between using frozen semen and cooled semen. Please read below to learn more about frozen semen.

Cost:
Frozen semen not only costs more to purchase, but it is also more expensive and labour intensive to breed your mare. You must also consider costs of shipping the semen to the veterinary clinic in a specialized shipper and storage fees for the semen if it is not used within the breeding season. Check with the stallion owner, as a live foal guarantee may or may not be part of the purchase price.

Success:
Frozen semen has a lower success rate as compared to fresh semen. The success rate is very stallion specific, as only about 30% of stallions produce semen that freezes well. Consider that the pregnancy rates for frozen semen are ~ 50% of the pregnancy rates of fresh semen.

Benefits:
By breeding mares with frozen semen, we are able to expand the genetic quality of our horses by allowing us to breed from overseas stallions. Also, frozen semen can be used when a stallion is in active work/showing or recovering from an injury or illness. Frozen semen is also a way to breed to a stallion that is deceased.

WHEN CONTACTING YOUR CHOSEN STUD
When inquiring about stallion semen, ask the stud if they can inform you or us of the freezing percentages and breeding success rate with this particular stallion. We can then check this data against your mare’s stats to see if they are compatible. This will help to ensure a much better chance for your mare to become pregnant. A suggested combined age of the mare + the stallion’s age should not exceed 25 yrs.

Please see our mare reproductive pricing letter for this year’s breeding prices and feel free to call us if you have any questions regarding frozen semen or any other service we provide.
